Taiwan's "Economic Daily News" on May 4, some people said that TSMC will set up a factory in Germany as soon as August, mainly producing 28-nanometer chips. If it does, it will be TSMC's first fab in the EU. TSMC President Wei Zhejia has previously indicated that the European plant will focus on the field of automotive chips.

According to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter said TSMC is in talks with partners to invest up to 10 billion euros ($11 billion) to build a chip manufacturing plant in Germany. The joint venture between TSMC, NXP, Bosch and Infineon will have a budget of at least 7 billion euros, including state subsidies, but could end up closer to 10 billion euros. In response, TSMC spokesman Gao Menghua said the company is still evaluating the possibility of setting up a factory in Europe. Spokesmen for NXP, Bosch, Infineon and the German economy ministry declined to comment.
